Microalgae cultivation in palm oil mill effluent (POME

Oct 15, 2018· Wastewater – palm oil mill effluent (POME) POME was obtained from Seri Ulu Langat Palm Oil Mill, located in Peninsular Malaysia. POME was filtered using 0.45 µm pore size membrane to eliminate suspended solids. Growth medium BG11 was diluted using POME to prepare POME-BG11 medium with POME spike ratio of 5%, 10% and 20% (v/v).

Oil Palm The Environment (updated March 2014)

A rapid increase in both downstream and upstream activities would normally have resulted in significant environmental pollution. This however was not the case with oil palm. In the early years of oil palm development, certain practices such as open burning and pollution of water ways by oil palm mill had an impact on the environment.

The high concentration of organic nutrient available in POME is more favorable for Chlorella pyreniodosa. There is a good example illustrated to confirm the dominant of microalgae species in Palm Oil Mill Effluent at two different stages i.e, algae before and after emerging, it can be seen that algae were dominant in surfaces of ponding area.

The microalgae Chlorella sp. grows well in POME medium sparged with a mixture of carbon dioxide (CO2) gas and air under 10,000 lx of lighting. The percentage of CO2 in the mixture, and the flow rate of the mixture (representing agitation) have important effects on the microalgae biomass yield. However, the percentage recovery of CO2 as microalgae biomass was very low in all cases, indicating
